IUP UGM Test Experience

IUP UGM Test Experience

Hey guys, I want to share my experience taking IUP (International Undergraduate Program) test for UGM back on  29th of June 2018. I took intake 3 for the test and there are actually 3 intakes with each scheduled around February, April and June. The program that I chose is Accounting/ Faculty of Economics. The test consists of GMST (Gadjah Mada Scholastic Test) and ACEPT (Academic English Proficiency Test) for the first day and if you’re through, the next day you will take LGD (Leaderless Group Discussion) and interview. You don’t need to take ACEPT test if you’ve submitted TOEFL or IELTS score to your registration.

What is GMST and ACEPT??

GMST-  it’s basically a TPA test, similar to SBMPTN TPA. I forgot exactly how many questions, but it’s around 80 questions. It consists of numbers order, reading, vocabulary, shapes, maths. For the maths you should study SAT Maths, (don’t worry the maths is not as hard as SBMPTN or SIMAK). You should read and memorize lots of uncommon words for the vocabulary part.
ACEPT-  I didn’t take this test because I submitted my TOEFL in the registration, but from the information I got it’s an English test similar to TOEFL just UGM version of it. So you should study TOEFL for this test and better if you took a TOEFL test before, so you don’t have to take the ACEPT test.

28th June:
I went to Yogyakarta one day before the test with my dad and brother, with my mom went later on the night because she had works to do in the office. We went by airplane because I live in Jakarta, very far and tiring if we don’t. Alhamdulilah we landed safely in Yogyakarta, as soon as we arrived we went straight to UGM to check the test location. My test location was in the FEB (Faculty of Economics and Business) building and it wasn’t hard to find the exact location because it’s in UGM main location. After checking my seat for tomorrow’s test we went to have lunch in sate restaurant then went to the hotel to take a rest. In the hotel I reviewed the main things for the GMST from 2 books I brought with all formulas and tricks related with the test. The main things I reviewed were maths and antonym/synonym. My tips are to take a rest, good sleep, enough food, and no pressure.

GMST: 29th June
The day finally arrived, I had nasi goreng from the hotel for breakfast (make sure you have breakfast, very important!). The GMST starts at 7-9 am and ACEPT starts at 10 am, by the way I didn’t take the ACEPT because I submitted TOEFL score already. We went at around 6 am and I shook my parent’s hands and pray before going to the test room. For GMST you’re not allowed to turn the page from one section to another just like TOEFL, don’t cheat! because each section has specific color and very easy to recognize. Alhamdulilah the test went smoothly, most of the maths are based on what I studied and some of the vocabs I read were also there. After the test we went to some places in Yogya while waiting for the announcement at 6 pm on that day. Alhamdulilah when we checked the announcement I’m through for the next day’s test. YAAAYYYY!!!

LGD and Interview: (Wear formal attire and be friendly)
LGD- you should practice by discussing a topic with friends or family together, the test consists of 2 judges (both are likely to be psychologist), speak but don’t be too active as you’ll be considered as the authority and don’t forget to smile and appreciate others about their opinion.
Interview- First thing first you have to be in good mood so that you’re seen as a happy, energetic person (it’ll be much easier for your flow), answer politely, do eye contacts. Some of the questions most likely to be there are: Tell about yourself, Why UGM?, Why do you choose your major?.

30th of June:
I practiced both LGD and interview with my parents. They both are really good at interview and discussion so they taught me a lot and gave many tips. I was actually worried because I’ve never done an LGD and interview before. The next day arrived, this time I had to be there in the same building at 8 am. First thing I did when I arrived was to shake hands with the panitia I met and also talk to other applicants to boost my confidence. In my LGD and interview class consists of 8 people including me, of course we talked to each other first before entering the room so that it’s not super random. The discussion was around 45 minutes. Once in the room we’re told to put our bags and belongings away. There were 2 judges and the topic was about “How to handle an employee whose work is very poor”. Before the discussion began we were given 15 minutes to read the article they gave. The main thing you have to do is speak (give your opinion), but DO NOT! take control of the discussion because LGD is not a discussion that your argument has to be granted by others, you can also say something like “what do you guys think about it?” after you say your opinion. The second test was the interview, I had to wait for around 30 minutes until my turn (the order is based on the absence). For the interview I did mainly based on what I practiced and of course I improvised for unexpected questions, so you guys have to be ready for any questions or reactions from the judges. Don’t forget to smile and give good, energetic expression to the judges (Very Important!). Alhamdulilah the interview is done and I went to meet my parents and brother, then we went to have fun in Yogyakarta before going home the next day.

GOOD LUCK!!!,  hopefully you’re accepted as UGM student.
